Do Make Say Think
Do Make Say Think
Do Make Say Think formed in Toronto in 1995-96 and self-released their self-recorded, self-titled debut CD in 1997, re-issued by Montréal-based indie label Constellation the following year. The band went on to release five more albums through the following decade – all of them self-produced, with band members Charles Spearin and Ohad Benchetrit (who also went on to production and performance in Broken Social Scene) and Justin Small (Lullabye Arkestra) forging an inimitable Do Make Say Think sound at the mixing desk, featuring highly original hybrids of psych, jazz, punk, prog and electronica. Escaping the all-too-familiar confines of generic post-rock with every album, forging compelling instrumental rock with just the right balance of noise, melody, texture, narrative depth and compositional acumen, DMST is perhaps the most consistent and acclaimed instrumental/post-rock band of the 2000s: Pitchfork gave these albums ratings of 7.9, 8.1, 8.1, 7.9 and 7.2 respectively; Drowned In Sound called DMST’s discography “arguably the finest catalogue of any currently operating instrumental rock band”. While the band never truly went away, other involvements (family, film soundtrack work, Broken Social Scene, etc) preoccupied the members through the first half of the 2010s, until their return to the studio two years ago to begin writing and working on Stubborn Persistent Illusions, a 3-sided double album released in spring 2017 to near-unanimous critical praise.
